Insurance coverage guide

Plain-language information to help you compare policy structure. This content is general education, not legal, financial, or insurance advice.

Important: Coverage names and requirements vary by state and provider. Read the actual policy and confirm details with a licensed insurance professional.

Auto insurance

Auto policies may combine several coverages. Liability coverage generally addresses certain injuries or property damage for which an insured driver is legally responsible, subject to policy terms and limits. Collision and comprehensive cover damage to the insured vehicle in different circumstances and usually include a deductible.

Questions to compare

  • Are bodily injury and property damage limits the same in each option?
  • Are collision and comprehensive included, and what are the deductibles?
  • How are uninsured or underinsured motorist coverages handled?
  • Are all regular drivers and vehicles listed correctly?
  • What exclusions, mileage assumptions, or usage restrictions apply?

Home insurance

Home policies commonly address the dwelling, other structures, personal property, liability, and additional living expenses after certain covered losses. Flood, earthquake, wear and tear, maintenance issues, and other causes may be excluded or require separate coverage.

Questions to compare

  • Is dwelling coverage based on an appropriate rebuilding estimate?
  • Is personal property covered at replacement cost or actual cash value?
  • What is the deductible, and are there separate deductibles for certain losses?
  • Which causes of loss and property categories are limited or excluded?
  • Are home-based business activities or high-value items addressed?

Renters insurance

Renters insurance may protect personal belongings, personal liability, and additional living expenses after a covered event. It generally does not insure the building itself, which is normally the property owner’s responsibility.

Questions to compare

  • How much personal property coverage is included?
  • Are belongings covered away from the residence?
  • What liability limit and deductible apply?
  • Are jewelry, electronics, bicycles, or business property limited?
  • What documentation is needed if a claim occurs?

What may affect price

Common pricing factors can include location, claims history, property characteristics, vehicle and driver information, selected limits, deductibles, optional protections, and provider underwriting rules. No single factor guarantees a particular price.
